Ultra-Conservative Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's New Leader.
After a definitive second-round vote, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Win
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having previously been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Centered On Security and Immigration
Noted for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to tackle increasing violence and significantly reduce immigration.
He frequently cited migrants, especially the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he issued an ultimatum for them to leave before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His policy ideas featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting detention centers, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern border.
Amid a Regional Trend
Several analysts interpret Kast's success as part of a wider rightward shift in South America, following recent electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts also frame it as a part of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Solid Mandate
In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when all conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative reality may hinder his plans, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.
"We have several questions about what a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not said how he will implement them," said a political expert.
The professor added, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures associated with the right. However the area with much less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse throughout the race."
