Greenlandic Women Achieve Judicial Triumph over Struggle against Denmark regarding Coerced IUD Affair.
Victims of a historical campaign in which thousands comprising Inuit women and girls were forcibly fitted with contraceptive coils without their knowledge or consent have claimed victory following their legal fight with Copenhagen.
Officials have confirmed the women are now eligible for financial redress from a settlement fund.
Government Settlement Finalized
Folketinget, along with state authorities, finalized a deal that entitles approximately 4,500 Greenlandic women the right to seek 300,000 DKK (around thirty-five thousand pounds) each.
This announcement comes after a three-year campaign by 143 claimants that initiated legal proceedings seeking damages for the pain and suffering they had endured, arguing it was a breach of fundamental human rights.
Historical Background
The Danish state administered Greenland under colonial rule until 1953 maintaining authority over the island's healthcare system until 1992.
Earlier this year, after years of failing to acknowledge these actions, the government issued a formal expression of regret. The prime minister apologized over the “institutional prejudice” targeting Greenlandic females within the state medical apparatus.
“These actions caused significant consequences for the Greenlandic women who have experienced not only bodily but also mental trauma,” stated the senior official.
Redress Process Details
The health ministry clarified that women subjected to contraception covertly during a thirty-one year period would be able to apply for payment starting next year. Relevant legislation will come into force by mid-year.
According to the findings of an independent inquiry into medical procedures during that time, an estimated four and a half thousand individuals are potentially eligible for compensation.
For eligibility, the women must:
- Provide a “plausible account” of the incident.
- Have lived on the island throughout the qualifying period.
- Declare under oath that they possessed no awareness nor gave permission for it to occur.
Voices from the Survivors
One of the women, recalling being 14 at the time she was instructed to go to the hospital without explanation, described the experience like an assault.
“Speaking out as speakers and interviewees has been successful,” she stated. “We started in 2022 resulting in within three years we have secured an official apology and compensation.”
A different perspective shared happiness, saying, “This is a positive outcome. As my mother put it: we won.” While some believe the compensation could have been higher, there is contentment regarding the acknowledgment of past events.

A Greenlandic official described the settlement as “long overdue”. She emphasized, “It is not about the money. It concerns recognition of the injury and the very severe implications.”
A Danish cabinet member acknowledged the scandal represent a “troubling period in our shared history”, noting while redress “cannot remove the suffering for survivors” yet it “serves to acknowledge and apologise for the experiences.”
