Climate Heating in New England Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The American area known for its historical past, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a rapid transformation. New research finds that New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on the Earth.
Breakneck Pace of Transformation
The speed of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, as per the research. The pace of its temperature rise has reportedly increased notably in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's accelerating," stated a lead researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, alongside the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the researcher noted.
Study Methodology and Findings
For the analysis, researchers analyzed three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has warmed by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the global average, with the planet warming by around 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.
"This represents extremely rapid heating, which is worrying," commented the study author.
Notable Warming Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are increasing faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at double the speed of other seasons.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being reduced.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy captured by emissions.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from climate change is being held in the oceans like a huge storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that heat."
Impacts on Culture and Extremes
Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has experienced extreme climate events in the past decade, including enormous floods and prolonged dry spells.
The increasing temperatures endangers iconic elements of local culture:
- Syrup production is facing challenges by changing climate conditions.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or moved multiple times due to a lack of ice.
- Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of inadequate snow.
"I live just outside Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from much of the southern part of the region."
