Child of Former South African Head of State Zuma Refutes Terrorism Allegations as Legal Proceedings Starts
The daughter of former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked allegations at the commencement of her court case in the coastal city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over statements she published on social media in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her father.
A period of anarchy in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (ÂŁ2.2 billion).
She has been charged of fuelling this unrest and faces charges of provocation to commit terror acts and public violence.
History of the Legal Matter
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the previous president's apprehension for disobeying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was holding office.
She has repeatedly denied the charges against her, with her legal representative previously labelling the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an effort to resolve political scores with her dad after he started his own party and ran against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was supported by the foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "political and family-related persecution" against the former president and his kin.
A few of backers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the proceedings inside.
The defense has maintained that the proof presented by government lawyers is insufficient and does not have compelling proof for a conviction.
